Transauricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation
“The mind has great influence over the body, and maladies often have their origin there.” - Molière
Service Description
Transauricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is a form of painless and non-invasive brain stimulation that uses electrical impulses to stimulate the vagus nerve through the earlobe. This technique has been studied quite extensively as a potential treatment for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) due to the role of the vagus nerve in regulating social behaviour and communication. Some of the potential benefits of taVNS for autism include: * Improved social behaviour: Research has shown that taVNS may help to improve social behaviour in individuals with autism. For example, one study found that taVNS improved social engagement, communication, and autism symptom severity in children with ASD. * Reduced anxiety: taVNS may help to reduce anxiety symptoms in individuals with autism. Studies have shown that taVNS can decrease the activity of the amygdala, a brain region involved in anxiety and emotional processing, which may help to reduce anxiety symptoms in individuals with autism. * Improved communication: taVNS may also improve communication in individuals with autism. Studies have found that taVNS can increase activity in brain regions involved in language and communication, which may help to improve communication in individuals with autism. * Better attention: taVNS may also help to improve attention in individuals with autism. Studies have found that taVNS can increase activity in brain regions involved in attention, which may help to improve attention in individuals with autism. taVNS should not be considered a replacement for other treatments and therapies for autism. However, it is an adjunctive treatment that can potentially deliver improvements much faster when used with other therapies and treatments.
